True to the signs in the window over the last few months, Rowdy Hog Smokin’ BBQ opened up today over in the strip mall on the west side of Marion Road (923 S. Marion Rd).
Even though Rowdy’s has been in the BBQ circuit for years, including JazzFest stops, I’ve never tried them, so I decided to give the pulled pork sandwich and a half-rack of ribs a go today.
I liked the pulled pork quite a bit. Generous portion, tender meat and a sauce/spice that was full of flavor without being overpowering in any direction. Not tangy, not smokey, but solid. I did try some of the pork with a bit of the Smokin’ Hot sauce, and liked the elevated heat it added. I’d eat this again.
The ribs pulled off the bone fine, but the bark was so severe (the half slab looked a lump of char) and yet weirdly soft and the meat a bit bland, the ribs really didn’t do it for me.
But I’ll stress, again, I often go to these places when they first open and that isn’t always the best representation of what a restaurant will be as many places are just getting their feet under them. That’s why I always go back for a second or third time, try different things and see what shakes out.
They also serve a smoked chicken, wings, brisket and sides of beans, coleslaw, Gma K’s Potato Salad and French fries. Open M-Th, 11 a.m.-9 p.m., F-Sat, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
