The new, large, red sign in downtown Sioux Falls confirms what’s only been spoken in hushed tones for months: a new restaurant, run by the owner/operators of Mama’s Ladas, is moving into the space formerly known as Hamburger Inn.
‘Mama’s Phried and Phillys’ is the creation of Matt and Jayme Mothershead, and will feature Matt’s fried chicken, Philly sandwiches and other fried goodness.
Matt says his fried chicken is a favorite of family and friends, who pushed him to open the restaurant.
“They said, ‘You gotta do it, you have to sell your chicken,’” he said. “The more I thought about it, it just inspired me to give it a shot.”
In addition to the chicken, Philly cheese steak sandwiches will be a focus. Matt, who went to high school in Philadelphia, says he’s struggled to find a decent cheese steak, and plans to fix that.
“I decided I need to do a real cheese steak around here too,” he said.
Both the interior of the building (they kept the 12 counter seats and plan to do a brisk to-go business) and the menu are still under a construction, so Matt says he plans on an early Fall opening. Mama’s Ladas will continue operation downtown as well.
“It was an opportunity to invest in downtown,” Matt said. “We know how it’s growing down here, and wanted to own our little piece of it.”
“We’re the same two businesses: same service, same quality product. Everyone knows how we operate, and we look forward to serving downtown,” he added
