One thing to try: Hummus at Baladna

Hidden just east of the Kaladi’s on Minnesota Avenue and 26th Street is a Mediterranean restaurant and grocer most don’t know about: Baladna Kitchen.

Though, clearly some people know about it, since it’s been in business now for a couple years, serving up some great middle eastern fare like  falafel, kabobs and Arabic stews.

And the hummus appetizer.

I must love chic peas since I love hummus and falafel. And while hummus can take on many different flavors depending on what you add to/mix with it, a good base is important.

Baladna’s is smooth, slightly garlicy and earthy. Drizzled with olive oil, with small deposits of cummin around the plate, this dish is a winner. Not only great with the pita bread served, but it was a great spread or dip on my falafel as well.

If you’ve not been to Baladna, give it a try. They have chicken and beef dishes too, and while the restaurant is very sparse, I think you’ll be impressed with the food.
