On the Tour: Diner chislic a winner, deep-fried Twinkie brings it home

Even though (again) I can’t win any of the prizes we are offering during the Falls Taste Tour, many of the places on the Tour are some of my favorites in town, so I end up participating in vain anyway. Plus, I do love Instagraming my meals, so it’s a win/win/can’t win situation.

And recently, some friends of mine have been discussing who has the best chislic in town (a discussion for another post possibly!), so when I was perusing the Philips Avenue Diner menu recently, the Diner Chislic jumped out. I’d never ordered it, and this presentation seemed worth ordering for the group: marinated and lightly fried steak, served with white cheese sauce, marinated tomatoes, Gorgonzola cheese and fried onions. Whoa.

And it was awesome.

When it came to the table, some were worried it might be too cooked/burned. But nay; it was just gloriously seared and seasoned, almost blackened. But each cube of steak was tender and juicy. With the onions, cheese and tomato, this was an outstanding start to the meal.

I followed that up with the gut-bomb of a burger, the Godfather. This burger has smoked mozzarella, marinara sauce, banana peppers and, the topper, two mozzarella cheese sticks. It’s gluttony for sure. I’d even say I was gluttony personified at that point.

But we weren’t done.

The real reason we ended up at the Diner was after Hostess announced it was shutting down operations early that Friday morning, they took the opportunity to market to folks like me on Facebook: “Come and get your Deep Fried Twinkie while you still can ….”

Done and done.

You can see above the fried Twinkie was surrounded by raspberry glaze, chocolate and whipped cream, then topped with powdered sugar. Split between the group, this was still enough rich goodness to go around.

I’m glad the Diner exists. I’m glad they make crazy-good chislic. And I’m glad they’re not above making a deep-fried Twinkie for gluttons like me.
